Van Cleef & Arpels — Mid-20th Century 18ct yellow Gold and Emerald Leaf Brooch

A striking mid-20th century gold and emerald leaf brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, featuring a naturalistic design characteristic of the Maison’s celebrated floral and botanical jewels of the 1960s and 1970s.

The brooch is faintly signed Van Cleef & Arpels, although the signature is indistinct. It bears French hallmarks, including the maker’s mark of André Vassort.

Measuring 8.9 cm in length and weighing 19.5 grams, the substantial brooch demonstrates the technical precision and elegant craftsmanship for which Vassort’s workshop was renowned.

André Vassort registered his business at 34 Rue Sainte-Anne, Paris, in December 1955. His highly respected workshop became an important manufacturer for leading French jewellery houses, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Mauboussin and Boucheron. Alongside producing the maisons’ standard collections, Vassort also undertook special commissions for distinguished clients. His expertise in goldsmithing resulted in jewels of exceptional technical refinement, often conveying a remarkable sense of movement and natural vitality.
