People are often surprised when I tell them that if I were buying a piece for myself or a loved one, I'd usually look at the pre-owned market before walking into a boutique.

That's not because there's anything wrong with buying new. There are occasions where buying directly from the brand is exactly the right choice.

But after spending decades buying, selling and handling some of the world's finest jewellery, I've come to appreciate just how much the pre-owned market has to offer.

The craftsmanship hasn't changed

One of the biggest misconceptions about pre-owned jewellery is that it's somehow "second best."

In reality, a Cartier Love bracelet made ten years ago is still a Cartier Love bracelet. A Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra pendant is crafted to the same exceptional standards that made it so desirable in the first place.

Luxury jewellery is designed to last generations. That's part of its appeal. When a piece has been well looked after, it offers the same beauty, quality and enjoyment as a brand-new example.

Someone else has already taken the biggest depreciation

Like many luxury purchases, new jewellery often loses value the moment it leaves the boutique. That's simply the nature of retail pricing.

Buying pre-owned allows someone else to absorb that initial depreciation, meaning your money goes much further. In many cases, you'll be able to buy a larger piece, a rarer model, or one with original packaging and papers for a similar budget to a new equivalent.

It's one of the reasons many experienced collectors rarely buy new.

You can find pieces that are no longer available

This is one of the aspects I enjoy most. Luxury houses regularly discontinue designs, alter collections or make subtle changes over time.

The pre-owned market gives you access to pieces that can no longer be purchased from the boutique, whether that's an earlier version of a favourite design, a limited production model or something with details that simply aren't made anymore.

For many clients, that's far more exciting than buying what's currently in the display cabinet.

Jewellery with a story

I've always believed jewellery is about far more than precious metals and gemstones. Many of the pieces I buy have celebrated engagements, anniversaries, promotions or family milestones before finding their next owner.

There's something rather lovely about giving a beautiful piece a new chapter instead of leaving it tucked away in a safe. Luxury jewellery is made to be worn, enjoyed and passed on.

Better for the planet, too

Choosing pre-owned is also a more sustainable way to buy luxury. No new materials need to be mined or manufactured, and exceptional craftsmanship continues to be appreciated rather than replaced.

For many clients, that's an important part of the decision, although I suspect the quality and value are usually what attract them first.

Buy the piece, not just the name

One thing I always encourage clients to do is look beyond the logo. Condition, authenticity, originality, provenance and servicing history are often far more important than simply finding the lowest price online.

A beautiful piece that has been cared for properly will almost always bring more enjoyment than one that's been heavily polished, poorly repaired or isn't quite what it claims to be.

That's why I spend so much time sourcing every piece personally.

Buying pre-owned luxury jewellery should feel exciting, not daunting. Whether you're looking for your first Cartier ring, a vintage Rolex, or searching for something you may have been looking for, for years, confidence comes from knowing exactly what you're buying.

Every piece I source is carefully inspected and selected because it's something I'd be happy to own myself.

Sometimes that means saying no to pieces that don't quite meet my standards. I'd much rather lose a sale than compromise on quality.

Final thoughts

Buying new will always have its place, and for some people it's exactly the right choice.
